Eye on the Sky: Pakistan's first Saab-2000 (AEW&C) Aircraft

Pakistan Air Force inducted the first Saab-2000 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft into its fleet at a simple and dignified ceremony held at PAF Base Minhas here on Tuesday.

The ceremony of formal induction of Swedish Saab -2000 Awacs aircraft meant for aerial surveillance in the Pakistan Air Force at PAF base Kamra. Talking to media Air Chief said four-aircraft deal for Saab-2000 worth $866 million have been signed and Pakistan would get 3 more Saab jets from Sweden by 2011. He said 4 more Saab jets acquired from China would also be inducted in the fleet by 2011.

Induction of this system is part of the overall PAF strategy of transforming itself into a lean and technologically advanced air forces. With the induction of the Saab-2000 AEW&C, PAF becomes one of the few air forces in the world to have an Airborne Early Warning and Control capability & became the second country in the region to have inducted the sophisticated surveillance aircraft in its air force.

Saab 2000 aircraft is fitted with the latest technology to detect aircraft flying at high and medium altitudes. With state-of-the-art system, it is also capable of detecting objects flying at lower levels over land and sea at extended ranges. The system is also capable of detecting surface targets over sea. Erieye system provides 300 degree coverage and has an effective detection range of only 300 km to 350 km. It uses a pulse Doppler radar with a fixed, wedge-shaped antenna. Read More
