We should boycott World Cup if it stays in Asia

KARACHI: Pakistan cricket legend Zaheer Abbas on Friday asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to boycott the 2011 World Cup if it is held in the rest of the sub-continent.

"It's time that Pakistan cricket breaks its silence over what's been happening against it in recent times," said Zaheer. "The ICC took away the Champions Trophy and now it has deprived us of the World Cup. What else should happen before we broke our silence," he lamented.

"I would ask the PCB to make it clear to the ICC that we will boycott the World Cup if it is held in Asia.

"If Pakistan is unsafe for the event then there is no justification to have the World Cup in other parts of the sub-continent which are also within the range of the terrorists," he said.

The ICC ditched Pakistan as World Cup hosts because of security concerns on Friday.

Zaheer lashed out at the ICC, saying that it showed little sympathy to Pakistan and took the World Cup away from here at the drop of a hat.

Zaheer also blamed the Indian cricket board (BCCI) for allegedly ruining Pakistan's cause in a bid to steal away its share of World Cup matches.

"It's a great loss for Pakistan cricket and for that I would blame the ICC and India which has pulled out its support when we needed it the most," he said.

Zaheer also held the ICC chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, responsible for the anti-Pakistan stance adopted by the cricket world.

"It seems that Mr Lorgat has been given an assignment to destroy Pakistan cricket," he alleged.
